I wrote this article about two of the most innovative and exciting films I've seen in the last year, Sav Rodgers' 'Chasing Chasing Amy' and Vera Drew's 'The People's Joker'. These films have a lot in common and together represent the bright future of telling stories about the very stories that made each of us who we are.

Film makers, have you ever poured your heart and soul into a film, only to find it leaving audiences feeling...well, neutral? The power of a truly impactful documentary lies in its ability to transcend mere information and connect with viewers on an emotional level. It's not about manipulating or exploiting, but about tapping into the universal human experiences that bind us all. But how do you achieve this delicate balance? This is where my book, "Docie Warrior" comes in. I delve deep into the art of emotional storytelling, providing practical tools and insights to help you craft documentaries that resonate long after the credits roll. Here are just a few key takeaways from the book:1. Embrace vulnerability: Don't shy away from showcasing the raw emotions and challenges faced by your subjects. This authenticity fosters empathy and connection.2. Capture genuine moments: Scripted interviews can feel forced. Instead, focus on capturing unexpected moments of laughter, tears, and genuine interaction.3. Harness the power of sound: Music and sound design can subtly influence viewers' emotions, setting the tone and amplifying the emotional impact of your visuals.4. Let your passion shine through: When you're genuinely passionate about your subject, that enthusiasm contagious and draws viewers in.Remember, powerful storytelling is all about forging a human connection. It's about making viewers laugh, cry, and most importantly, care about the story you're telling. Are you ready to become a #DocieWarrior?#documentaryfilmmaking #DocieWarrior #filmmaking #storytelling #impact #empathy #humanconnectionP.S. Every documentary needs a guide. Maybe it’s text. Narration. An expert. News clips. An interviewee. You as the filmmaker. It’s someone or something that can explain things when the audience has questions, and signal when the documentary is changing directions. Identify that strong central figure or story element, and your audience will have a friend they recognize to guide them through the story.
